Abstract: Burgeoning urbanization in Thailand has rapidly given rise to the adverse impacts on its visual quality of landscape. At present, these undesirable effects have become increasingly distinguishable, resulting in more awareness on appropriate landscape management. Visual quality analysis and assessment is an objective method to measure and evaluate aesthetic values of certain landscape, which may include interpreting people’s attitude or preference towards these qualities, in order to determine the apposite development direction of that area. The essential purpose of this paper is to examine the widely accepted methodologies of this method with the intention of implementing this knowledge for landscape management planning that is suitable for the context of Thailand. Realizing the visual quality problems in Thailand, particularly in the tourist areas with prominent scenic resources, the Office of Natural Resources and Environmental Policy and Planning (ONEP) has given support to study the application of this method so as to indicate the plausible direction to tackle such onerous problems. Hua Hin, one of Thailand’s most popular coastal tourist destinations, was selected by ONEP as a pilot project. This project has become the starting point of the implementation of the knowledge on visual quality analysis and assessment for landscape management planning in Thailand. Additionally, the study result has led to recommending the development direction as well as suggesting potential approaches to maintain and reminisce about the valuable scenic quality of the area.
